with Henri Picciotto

I will offer my grades 6-9 Visual Algebra workshop twice this summer, as part of summer institutes.

June 25-27, 2019: at Synapse School in Silicon Valley
August 7-9, 2019: at Atrium School near Boston

Registration and logistics info

If the topics, times, or location don't work for you, I can offer a workshop for your school or district. Contact me directly.

I recommend attending with a colleague, as it makes it easier
to implement these ideas when you get back to school in the fall.

Visual Algebra (grades 6-9)

with Henri Picciotto

lab-gear

In this three-day workshop, I will present a wealth of visual approaches to the teaching of algebra in grades 6-9, including:

  • Lab Gear manipulatives for basic symbol manipulation
  • geoboard lattices for slope
  • a powerful parallel axes representation for linear functions
  • intelligent use of technology

Participants will learn techniques that will allow them to serve the whole range of students better by offering:

  • greater access, because of using multiple representations
  • greater challenge, because of expecting multi-dimensional understanding
  • greater variety, because of using manipulative and electronic tools

The workshop will be aligned with the Common Core State Standards, both in content and in mathematical practices.

Check this site in March for Continuing Education Units info.
